Zojirushi Rice CookerJapanese rice cookers are some of the most well made in the world and the brand that stands out above the rest is Zojirushi.  One of the reasons why the Zojirushi rice cooker are so popular is because it has some of the best rated in terms of quality and dependability.   But many consumers still avoid them because they view them as very expensive.  This is a mistake because Zojirushi also produce some really well made electric rice cookers and while they may cost less that are still produce with the same type of quality expected of a Zojirushi appliance.  The only difference between a $50 rice cooker and a $300 rice cooker are the amount of features included.  So in this review I will list these features for you according to price range and hopefully dispel this misconception that Zojirushi is too expensive for the average consumer. I will be listing the features available from a lowest to highest in the following list

Also to note that although this article deals specifically with Zojirushi these features I will list is also common to other brands.

Zojirushi Rice Cooker Features

Regular Electric Rice Cooker:

On a conventional rice cooker you will normally find 2 features.  The features are the cook feature and the automatically keep warm feature.  The cook feature allows the rice to be cook automatically without much supervision and the process can take anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes.  Once the rice is done you will need to allow it to sit for about 15 minutes before serving.  The automatic keep warm function will then continue keeping the rice warm after it is done for several hours depending on the model.

A regular electric Zojirushi rice cooker can cost anywhere from $40 and up.

Micom Rice Cooker:

Micom is a short acronym for micro computerized.  It is easily recognized by the digital timer /clock on the front and has various buttons to control the settings such as the timer and type of rice you would like to cook.  It is very convenient for health conscious users because it allows you to adjust the cooking for various types of rice that include brown and sushi with just a click of a button.

Besides the ability to select different types of rice to cook a Micom rice cooker also has a timer that allows you to delay cooking , so you can prepare the rice earlier in the morning and have it ready to serve at dinner.  This feature is normally available in rice cookers from $100 and up but sometimes if there is a sale you can find one as low as $80.

Fuzzy Technology:

Most top of the line rice cooker will have this technology.  Zojirushi’s version is trademark as Neuro Fuzzy.  Unlike a regular cooker that just turns on and off a Neuro fuzzy cooker can automatically adjust the temperature depending on the situation.  You can adjust your rice to cook hard or soft, dry or watery depending on preference.  It can also be program to cooking white, brown, wild and sweet rice.

Similar to the Micom function the Neuro Fuzzy technology is readily available on rice cookers starting around $80 but the price will be higher depending on the size of the cooker.

Induction Heating System:

Zojirushi NP-HTC10 Induction Heating Rice Cooker

This is a whole new way of cooking rice.  On regular rice cooker heat is produced on the bottom of the pan to heat the cooker and the rice is finish cooking when the temperature reaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit.  With Induction Heating the whole inner pot becomes heated. The benefits of this are that the rice is cooked faster and more evenly.  You won’t have to worry about over cooked rice on the bottom of the bowl anymore as the rice cooker is able to fine tune the cooking process automatically so you can perfect rice every time.

This is the highest price rice cooker on the market at the moment and can set you back about $350 to $400.

How do you determine which is the right Zojirushi rice cooker for you?

There are several questions you need to ask yourself if you are thinking about getting one of the Zojirushi rice cookers.

  • Do you eat rice on a regularly?
  • Do you other types of rice besides white rice?
  • Are you very busy every day and don’t have time to cook at night or in the morning?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions that I would suggest you take a look at a rice cooker with the Micom and fuzzy logic function.  It will give you the flexibility of setting your timer to cook at any time during the day or night.  It will allow the option of cooking different types of rice within their selectable menu without having to adjust or read too many instructions.

If you answered no to all the questions than a better fit for you would be a regular rice electric rice cooker with the automatic keep warm function.  You will still have the ability to cook a wide variety of rice and the warming function will still be really convenient.  The only thing to keep in mind is when cooking anything outside of white rice you need to make sure you have the correct water ratio and ingredients.

If you are looking for a rice cooker with all the functions than an Induction heating System will be your best choice.  It will provide you with evenly cooked rice and do it faster than any other rice cookers in the market. Plus it will still have all the features of the other rice cookers.
